Overview

Founded in the 1960s, Bath's modern hillside campus sits above the Georgian city, and is renowned for science, engineering, business and its outstanding sports facilities. Team Bath is one of the big hitters in the university sports leagues and home to many national and international-standard athletes, who can combine their studies with top-class training. The university saw a record number of applications and admissions in 2023, with 4,750 students enrolling through Ucas - an almost 7% rise on the year before. Bath is hugely popular with graduate employers, too, and our University of the Year for Graduate Jobs award last year acknowledged this. Graduates command some of the highest starting salaries of any university. Bath works hard to integrate students from all walks of life. The 50 annual recipients of the Gold scholarship, who come from under-represented and low-income backgrounds, have the option of receiving mentoring, training in personal development, networking and skills, and support with securing placements and internships. They also take part in 50 hours of volunteering, fundraising or outreach work.

Paying the bills

Bath spends more than £4.5m a year on targeted financial support for students. All students from homes with an income of up to £30,000 can get £750 of help with university accommodation fees in their first year through the Bath bursary or the Gold scholarship. In recognition of the fact that middle-income homes are being hit hard now, those from households with an income of between £30,000 and £42,875 get a £1,000 discount on first-year accommodation fees. This falls to £500 for those from homes with income between £42,876 and £60,000 - one of the highest thresholds for support at any university. Students awarded the Bath bursary also get £1,000 in cash and a £1,000 credit for food and drink on campus for each year of study. Those with Gold scholarships receive extra cash, making the award worth £5,000 each year. The sums for both awards vary in paid placement years. Recipients of the Gold scholarship need to meet contextual criteria, such as having been eligible for free school meals or living in a postcode with high deprivation levels. There is further funding available for care leavers, young carers, estranged students and refugees, as well as corporate scholarships. Bath doubled its hardship fund in the past academic year, with the maximum award payable set at £3,500. The university has just under 4,500 student rooms, which range in price from £5,282 to £9,538 for 38 weeks for self-catered accommodation. Catered rooms cost from £7,950 to £9,440.

What's new?

Bath's students already clean up in the graduate employment market, but the opening of a new employability hub will enhance their prospects further still. The centre at the heart of campus will help students with their placement and career options, job applications and interview preparation, as well as their personal, 다파벳카지노 professional and academic skills. A redesign of the wider student support facilities has recently been completed, and plans for some capital works to improve both capacity and visibility of these services have been approved. A refurbishment of the social space in the John Wood accommodation block will be completed by next September. This term will see the opening of a new 3G, floodlit, full-size sports pitch and a floodlit multi-sports area the size of three basketball or netball courts. These new facilities add to some of the best sports provision in the UK.

Admissions, teaching and student support

Bath has introduced automatic contextual offers for admissions this month. The offers, which are made in almost all subjects, result in a one-grade drop on the standard offer. The university expects that around 22% of students will qualify for a contextual offer each year. Its widening access team works across the UK to support under-represented students, although the university lags behind some of its top 10 rivals when it comes to the proportion of first-generation students on campus. All students who complete the outreach schemes Pathway to Bath (an online blended learning programme involving a project) and Discover Bath (a residential course for year 12 students) are guaranteed an offer from the university. Around 90% of timetabled teaching is delivered in-person, supported by online elements and structured independent study. The university stresses that the in-person provision ensures students' learning is worked through in practice, while the online work allows students to share and explore ideas in a group. Mental health and wellbeing support is available to students 365 days a year. A student support centre offering in-person appointments is complemented by Microsoft Teams and phone appointments. Registered mental health practitioners are on hand to support students with severe mental health difficulties, while a therapeutic service offers free, short-term counselling. The wellbeing service is there to help those with low to moderate levels of low mood or anxiety, or those experiencing more complex social difficulties. A wellbeing app and a 24/7 Be Well, Talk Now telephone service is there to provide students with immediate advice and support. All new students attend a mandatory University Life session, which covers how to stay safe and get help. They also receive a Helpful Little Card, which features the details of the wellbeing service, students' union advice centre and campus security. New students are also expected to complete an online training course in active consent and a further interactive session as part of the #NeverOK initiative at the university, covering racial, sexual and social tolerance. This includes a Be The Change training session on being an active bystander. Completion is monitored and reminders sent.
